We usually think of a facial as a one-off treat before a celebration or a quick fix solution to a bad skin break out. However, it’s better to think of a good facial as an important part of your skincare regime. Something to invest in, just like you would replace your favourite skincare when it runs out. When you think that the skin is our body’s largest organ, it makes sense to take care of it.
A lot of people ask me 'How often should I have a facial?' Well in truth, there is no straight answer. Everyone’s skin is different and in some cases, where corrective work is needed (such as acne for example) this may need to be treated as often as every week, but in most cases to achieve and maintain healthy skin it’s good to have a facial at least every 4 weeks combining with suitable skincare routine at home also.
In an ideal world, the epidermis should shed and renew itself every 28 days, as it does in a young, healthy skin but as we get older, or through poor skincare choices, this can slow down dramatically. As you enter your 30's this is more like 38 days, 40's can take 48 days, 50's, 58 days and so on (you get the idea). When the natural cell renewal process slows down, that is when your skin may need a little encouragement.
Using quality exfoliators, having a regular facials or a chemical peel session will help get things moving along. Be mindful however not to overdo it, as this can cause sensitisation and an impaired skin barrier function, which can result in other skin issues. It's important to get the right type of exfoliation and also the right frequency which a professional skin therapist can guide you with. In any case, as old layers of skin come away, it is crucial to treat the new skin with active ingredients that will hydrate, clear, soothe to make your skin strong and healthy.
